THINGS TO DO FOR FREE IN LJUBLJANA

A lot of backpackers have one thing in common – travelling on a low budget. Spending as little as possible is their first priority. So what can be better than a day well spent, exploring the city totally for free? Here is a list of things you can do for free in Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia.
EXPLORE THE TOWN
Every day there is a Free walking tour which starts at 11 a.m. in front of the pink church, located on Prešeren square. Very nice local tour guides, full of knowledge, will take you around the city centre and show you all the important sights – Three bridges, Dragon Bridge, Market, City hall,.. The tour lasts around 2 hours and you will get to know all about Ljubljana’s history. City castle is on a small hill in the centre, 60 metres above the old town. After 15 minutes of walking uphill beautiful view of the city will be your reward. If you like museums make sure to arrive in the city the first Sunday of every month. There is no entrance fee for the museums on this day.
TRY LOCAL FOOD
Central market, between Vodnikov and Pogačarjev square, offers open air market, covered market and food shops running along the Ljubljanica river. It’s opened all year long, from Mondays to Sundays. Slovenian farmers sell organic vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat, spices, meat and traditional Slovenian food. Every Friday from the end of March to the end of October from 8 a.m to 10 p.m. Open Kitchen event is happening in the same location. All the best restaurants from Slovenia gather in one place, selling specialities from their menus. It is one of the most popular event in Ljubljana. Coffee lovers love to sit in the bars along the river or go to Skyscraper and enjoy amazing view of the city as well.
DAY SPENT IN NATURE
Tivoli park is the biggest park and number 1 picnic spot in Ljubljana, just 10 minute walk from the main square. It’s perfect for jogging, walking or just relaxing. For more intense workout, hike up to Rožnik or Šmarna gora. Last one has several paths leading to the top and it takes 30 minutes to one hour to reach it. Local food and drinks are sold in the restaurant on top which also has a large outdoor terrace.
FOR ALTERNATIVE SOULS
Metelkova City is an autonomous social centre, located on the site of former military barracks. The site consists of seven buildings which include an art gallery, bars, artist studios, space for designers, offices of cultural organisations and concerts featuring different types of live music. To take some beautiful pictures of graffiti go there in the daytime. If you are interested in skateboarding, stop in Park Rog on the way to Metelkova.
